New Names, New Chapter for Gaslamp Watering Holes

Two bistros in the Hard Rock Hotel San Diego that were formerly under the operation of celebrity nightclub owner Rande Gerber have been renamed. What was once the Sweetwater Saloon on the street level off the lobby of the 420-room property is now 207, and the fourth-floor outdoor pool deck that was the Moonstone Lounge is now called Float.

Tarsadia Hotels of Newport Beach, which developed the downtown property, ousted Gerber, the lessee, and his crews in February amid allegations of mismanagement and verbal and physical abuse on the part of the bars’ employees, then reopened the venues.

Gerber, who is married to supermodel Cindy Crawford, later won the right to the bars’ names in court, but the judge also said that he would not force the two , Tarsadia and Gerber , to work together.

Gerber’s suit also seeks damages.

Meanwhile, Hard Rock Hotel hired the Portland-based interior design firm of Architropolis to “refresh” the two bars and plans a bash in April, said public relations manager Rana Kay.

Gramercy Management Group, which includes three veterans of the Las Vegas nightlife scene, Andy Hersch, Joe Barbour and Justin Zoots, has been retained as on-site managers.
