Federal Tenants Providing Mini-Stimulus

While the economy may be in the tank, at least one sector appears to be growing. The local executive for a group of commercial office buildings downtown says that many active new tenants happen to be federal government agencies looking for more space to handle the increase in programs and services. It’s a mini-stimulus for commercial landlords! Do the math. Hotel Indigo San Diego, set to open July 13, recently took the wraps off its gift to the San Diego skyline, “Indigo Waters,” a four-story glass sculpture titled by local sculptor Lisa Schirmer. The hotel spent $300,000 for the sculpture, which is based on the Fibonacci sequence, a famed mathematical concept. Glass panels are arranged vertically in sequence (1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13) in seven layers on a curved outside wall of the hotel The Centre City Development Corp. offered a challenge grant of $1 million to the downtown YWCA some time ago. But the YWCA has raised only $600,000 of $1 million needed. If the nonprofit can’t raise the final $400,000 in two months, it may have to return the grant, halting potential renovation of its historic C Street home. CEO Heather Finley says she is rushing to beat the calendar! Speaking of calendars, after a year of wrangling with City Hall over permits and building codes, Mission Hills’ cozy outdoor cinema is now officially back in business. Cinema Under the Stars got off to a fine start last week presenting Audrey Hepburn and Gregory Peck in a 1950s schmaltz-fest, “Roman Holiday.” Check out Topspresents.com for a schedule of films for the summer season and ticket information Not to be outdone in the movie showing department, Balboa Park’s Mingei International Museum presents a series of three 1950s and 1960s Hollywood films in July tied to its “Masters of Mid-Century California Modernism” exhibition. One of my favorites on the show bill is the James Bond international spy spoof, “Our Man Flint,” starring the late, great James Coburn. For information, browse mingei.org … Holy Cow! Marking the end of its three-month exhibition in La Jolla, the famed CowParade herd has been rounded up at Liberty Station before getting auctioned off to benefit the Zoological Society and Rady Children’s Hospital on July 11. Each cow was created by a local artist. CowParade has been held in 55 cities around the world since the first event in Chicago in 1999. “Moo-sy” on over to cowparadelajolla.com for details CommNexus and Leap Wireless are launching EvoNexus, a nonprofit incubator designed to help 10 local startups in the wireless niche over 24 months. Leap Wireless is donating office space, as well as equipment and mentoring. “Some of our best and brightest can’t find jobs,” says CommNexus CEO Rory Moore. “We need this.” More info at commnexus.org/incubator.
