We Are the Center of the Universe

Out and about, or here, there and everywhere … The last time we checked in, radio talk show impresario Mark Larson was trying to settle his contractual dispute with San Diego 1700 AM. Management abruptly terminated his early morning program a few weeks ago with two years and seven months left on his contract, but Larson tells the Insider he’s close to a deal. Meanwhile, Larson’s popping up with some regularity on local TV outlet KUSI, and expanding his small independent marketing firm into the PR realm. Stay tuned, as they used to say in the old days Speaking of media types, former L.A. Times business columnist James Flanigan has just come out with his new book, “Smile Southern California, You’re the Center of the Universe,” which assesses all aspects of the region’s powerhouse economy. Flanigan tells the Insider a third of his book focuses on San Diego. “The book contains a lot of San Diego, including the genesis of Qualcomm,” writes Flanigan. “(Qualcomm co-founders) Andrew Viterbi and Irwin Jacobs are the heroes of Chapter 2.” He also covers the launch of UC San Diego, among many other institutions and industries in his new tome How ’bout some really good news! The Sycuan tribe pledges $1.25 million to the new McGrath Family YMCA, which is sited on sacred tribal ground in Rancho San Diego in East County. Sherwood Montgomery were honored with the Shiley Lifetime Achievement Award at the 12th Annual Patte Awards for Theater Excellence gala on Jan 19. More than 450 attended the fete, which honors thespians involved in local theater.
