Cal State San Marcos Students to Benefit From $1.5M Grant

Cal State University San Marcos received a $1.5 million grant from the National Science Foundation for iQUEST, a project that focuses on serving poor and minority students to ensure their readiness, interest and participation in science and technology careers. “Through the iQUEST partnerships, we will impact the lives and career choices of students through connections with experts, scientists and resources that empower student learning and engage them in real scientific inquiry,” said Katherine Hayden, director of the program Andrew Viterbi, co-founder of Linkabit and Qualcomm, received a National Medal of Science for his work on the Viterbi algorithm Naval Medical Center San Diego celebrated the opening of Fisher House II on Oct. 3. The Fisher Houses provide respite and accommodations for families of active and retired military patients who have been admitted for care. “The new Fisher House expands our ability to provide a haven for families during a difficult time,” said Rear Adm. Christine S. Hunter, commander, Navy Medicine West Botanika Interior Plantscapes received an award of merit for design from the Plantscape Industry Alliance at that organization’s recent awards ceremony. The award was presented to owner Lexine Schroeder for achievement in horticultural design and display. The project for which Botanika won was the lobby of the Pinnacle Executive Centre in Rancho Bernardo The Public Relations Society of America has elected three San Diegans to its College of Fellows to be inducted at the PRSA’s International Conference on Oct. 25. Tom Gable of Gable PR; Elizabeth Pecsi, director, executive communications, Unisys; and Marisa Vallbona, president, CIM, were elected for lifetime achievement Mike Barone, president of Intercare Insurance Solutions, has been named a Power Broker by Risk and Insurance Magazine and Human Resource Executive for his leadership in the employee benefits and wellness arena, particularly through his education program, Intercare Wellness University. John Kahle, chief wellness officer, was recognized as employee benefit adviser of the year by Employee Benefit Adviser. Intercare is the only brokerage nationwide to be honored with both industry awards in the same year In honor of its 60th anniversary, Point Loma Credit Union has donated 60 new children’s books to the city library in Carlsbad. The credit union put the spotlight on reading by inviting local children’s authors to read from their books at a recent anniversary celebration Palomar Pomerado Health was named one of the top 100 places to work in health care by Modern Healthcare. “This is a tremendous recognition and noteworthy feat for everyone at PPH,” said Renda Turner, executive director of HR. Modern Healthcare’s Best Places to Work in Healthcare program identifies and recognizes organizations that have successfully built workplace excellence and enable employees to perform at their optimal level The La Jolla Festival of the Arts, produced by the Torrey Pines Kiwanis Foundation, celebrated its 22nd anniversary and raised $80,000, which will be distributed to 30 disabled-related associations. The foundation will announce its beneficiary allocation in November. “Funds are increasingly being directed to support rehabilitative programs for disabled veterans returning from Iran and Afghanistan,” said Club President Ronn Rohe YMCA Youth and Family Services division and the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation of America will be the beneficiaries of the 12th Anniversary Party and Beer Festival sponsored by Ballast Point Brewing Co. The event will be held Oct. 25 at Liberty Station. “Our previous experiences with sponsoring nonprofit organizations have been overwhelmingly positive,” said Jack White, founder of Ballast Point.
