Fisher House Opens Doors at Naval Hospital

San Diego’s second Fisher House opened Oct. 3 at Naval Medical Center San Diego in Balboa Park. The $4 million facility offers free, short-term housing to families of wounded service members who are in the hospital.

Tony Garczynski Development Inc. of Poway was general contractor for the 8,000-square-foot, 12-bedroom house. TriWest Healthcare Alliance, T. Boone Pickens and BP Capital funded the project. Phoenix-based TriWest is under a five-year contract to provide military health care under the Department of Defense’s TriCare program.

There are 38 Fisher Houses, with five under construction. Following construction, the houses are presented to the U.S. government as gifts. The federal government maintains the houses.

The first Fisher House in San Diego opened in 1992.
