Junior Version of Gulls Hockey to Skate in Escondido

Local hockey fans who have been iced out of their sport since the San Diego Gulls ceased playing in 2006 have something to cheer about with the announcement May 13 that the Gulls are returning to the area.

Bruce Miller, described as an entrepreneur and lifelong hockey fan, purchased the rights to the Gulls’ name from the owners, the Hahn family, for an undisclosed amount. Miller will field a minor league, junior A team at the Escondido Iceoplex starting in September, according to a news release.

Miller says the Gulls will begin recruiting players in the next few months from both Canada and the United States.

Ticket prices range from $5 to $7 at the 300-seat Iceoplex arena.

The Gulls played at the San Diego Sports Arena for 17 years, winning several championships, and were drawing an average attendance of about 6,000 fans per game when the Hahns decided to shut down the operation.
