Stem Cell Consortium Gets $43M for Research Facility

The first step in building a shared stem cell research facility in San Diego was taken May 7 with an announcement that the state stem cell agency will offer up $43 million to the San Diego Consortium for Regenerative Medicine.

The consortium is comprised of the Burnham Institute for Medical Research, The Scripps Research Institute, the Salk Institute and UC San Diego. Money from the state taxpayer-funded California Institute for Regenerative Medicine will help pay for a four-story research facility near the Torrey Pines gliderport.

Researchers from all four institutions will have use of the building, which will serve as a facility where scientists from a variety of disciplines combine expertise to bring new drugs and diagnostics to the market.

Altogether, the governing board for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine voted to dole out $271 million to 12 institutions. The institutions had originally requested $336 million.

The consortium requested $50 million, the maximum amount allowable under the agency’s guidelines.
