Scripps Hospital Encinitas Given Home Valued at $3.8 Million

Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas has been given a home in Fairbanks Ranch valued at $3.8 million. The property, donated by Toni Leichtag, will be sold and proceeds will go to buy equipment and help fund expansion plans. “Toni Leichtag and her late husband, Lee, have been generous supporters of Scripps Memorial Hospital Encinitas and the lifesaving care provided by our physicians and staff,” says Scripps President and Chief Executive Officer Chris Van Gorder. The gift is the single largest philanthropic donation in the hospital’s 44-year history.

The Bernard Osher Foundation is donating $1 million in scholarship endowment funds to Cal State San Marcos for students who transfer from state community colleges. This gift brings foundation contributions to $70 million to support the community college system. Last January, the foundation gave $1 million to the Lifelong Learning Institute at CSUSM.

The American Cancer Society sponsored the San Diego Invitational Golf Tournament held May 19 at the Del Mar Country Club. The $170,000 raised will benefit programs and services. Wells Fargo was the presenting sponsor and executive sponsors included Roth Capital Partners LLC, Celgene Corp., San Diego Padres and San Diego Gas & Electric Co.

The State Farm Cos. Foundation donated $27,000 to the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. “We are excited about expanding our long-established partnership with the foundation,” said Frank Alvarez, fund president and CEO.

The regional Alzheimer’s Association held its 2008 Gala on May 10 at the Manchester Grand Hyatt. The $200,000 raised will support programs in care, education and advocacy. Sponsors included the Dr. Seuss Fund/San Diego Foundation, Donald and Darlene Shiley, Kathy Wright & Co., Sunrise Senior Living and Wells Fargo Bank.

The Wells Fargo Foundation awarded a $50,000 grant to Accion San Diego, a micro-lender providing help to low- to moderate-income business owners. Accion also received funds from the Citi Foundation for summer graduate interns. Interns in the 12-week program receive $7,000 stipends from the foundation.

The Sodexo Foundation granted $75,000 to the Second Harvest Food Bank for food purchases. “The Sodexo Foundation is on the forefront in the fight against domestic hunger,” said Gary McDonald, president and CEO of the food bank.

Sony Electronics Inc. donated 37 laptop PCs valued at $55,000 to Casa de Amparo in Oceanside. Casa de Amparo provides child abuse treatment and prevention for families in the county. “Sony is an excellent corporate partner, and the laptops are a most welcome gift,” says Kathy Karpe, director of development.

Make-A-Wish Foundation partnered with Sammy’s Woodfired Pizza to sponsor a pizza cook-off event. The winning pizza was available on Sammy’s menu from April 28 through May 2 with $5,724 in proceeds donated to the nonprofit.

United Way of San Diego County is funding six agencies through its community impact program. “United Way will help low-income families turn their financial lives around by funding programs that show them how to handle money in a way that makes them stable, self-reliant and independent,” said Doug Sawyer, president and CEO of United Way.

The 23rd Annual TaylorMade-adidas Golf Co. “Fore” Your Heart ProAm raised $150,000 to support cardiovascular services at Tri-City Medical Center. The tournament was held at the Shadowridge Country Club in Vista.

Home of Guiding Hands received a $5,000 grant from San Diego Gas & Electric Co. to help fund community programs, which benefit low-income individuals with various disabilities. “We are happy to support efforts to promote personal growth through community interaction,” said Don Parent, public affairs manager for SDG & E;’s eastern district.
