Charging Stations for Hybrids the Next New Feature for Buildings

Want to lower air pollution, greenhouse gases and dependence on petroleum? Well, plug in. More and more residential developments and commercial complexes are installing electric charging stations.

The Ranch House at Del Sur, a welcome center built by Black Mountain Ranch LLC uses an electric car to whisk visitors around the 4,677-acre community in North San Diego near Santaluz. Shoppers at Westfield Mission Valley can park and plug in for free while shopping.

One new electric charging station for battery-operated vehicles is located at Bayside at the Embarcadero, a high-rise residential tower built by Bosa Development Corp. in downtown’s Columbia neighborhood.

“Bayside is the first of its kind in the area to provide this renewable energy for electric cars,” said Nat Bosa, chief executive officer of Canada-based Bosa Development. “It all started with one Bayside owner who needed a place to charge the battery of his electric car. Going green is the way of the future and we thought it was a brilliant idea to incorporate several charging stations for prospective eco-minded owners.”

Parking Garage Stations

Six charging stations are located on the third floor of the parking garage in the 36-story, 232-unit tower on Pacific Highway near Ash Street. Pricing begins at $700,000 and runs though $12.5 million for condos ranging from 1,031 square feet on up to an 8,370-square-foot penthouse.

Bosa has plans to incorporate electric charging stations in several other of its projects.

Plug-in hybrid vehicles use gas and electricity to power the vehicle. The vehicle can be plugged into a standard 110 volt wall outlet to recharge the battery.

Derik Giner, project coordinator for Bosa, said installing electrical outlets for these charging stations is simple.

“It is just a regular plug on a dedicated outlet,” said Giner. “But with some demand we can easily put these in any development.”
