State Agency Gives Grants to Old Globe Theatre, San Diego Zoo

The Old Globe Theatre has received a $1.6 million grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment. The funds will be used for the rebuilding of Cassius Carter Theater. This is part of a $75 million campaign of which $55 million has been raised for the construction of the theater.

The San Diego Zoo has received a $1 million state grant from the California Cultural and Historical Endowment Board, which distributes money from a state infrastructure bond that voters approved in 2002. The grant will be used towards a $45 million project to build a new elephant exhibit, which is expected to open in spring 2009.

Pardee Homes’ employees raised $37,000 for research at the MS Challenge Walk. “Team Pardee Homes rallied together to once again support this worthwhile cause,” said Sandra Kitashima, communications coordinator and team captain for Pardee Homes.

The Birds of a Feather Gala presented by the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy was held Sept. 15. Sponsors included Union Bank of California, Merrill Lynch/Private Banking and Investment Group, Hokanson Capital Management, the SGS Group at Smith Barney and Charles Schwab & Co.

The $100,000 raised will be used for education and public outreach programs that serve local area students and adults. The mission of the conservancy is to preserve, protect and enhance the natural resources of the San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve.

Genentech Inc. and Biogen Idec were the presenting sponsors for the Arthritis Foundation Gala 2007 on Sept. 15. The Dennis and Pamela Mudd Foundation, Centocor, Weingart-Price Foundation and Limbrel were sponsors. Arthritis research and local programs and services such as a camp for children with arthritis will be supported with the $182,000 raised. Another $29,000 was raised to provide medicine to patients and free arthritis medical clinics.

North County Trade Tech High School has been awarded a $600,000 grant from the state Department of Education. The funds are designated for implementing construction of the North County Trade Tech High School.

The Emilio Nares Foundation held the Fourth Annual Harvest for Hope on Sept. 16. Major sponsors included the Lance Armstrong Foundation, Ingrid Croce and Jim Rock, the Brees Dream Foundation and Wells Fargo Bank’s Rancho Santa Fe branch. The event raised $120,000, which is used to support the mission of helping families who have been coping with life-threatening illnesses. ENF provides parent and family support groups, respite care and transportation to families whose children have cancer.

Stepping Stone of San Diego Inc., a nonprofit that operates a residential and non-residential recovery program for substance abuse, hosted its annual “Living Out Loud” fund-raiser at the Marston Point Estate in Hillcrest. Entertainer Leslie Jordan, an Emmy award-winner for his guest role on “Will and Grace,” entertained along with Alison Arngrim, who starred in “Little House on the Prairie.” Stepping Stone is dedicated to creating, improving and delivering substance abuse treatment as well as HIV, and other health interventions, recovery, education and prevention services in San Diego.

Advocates for Classical Music sponsored “An Evening in Italia” on Sept. 15 at a private home in Kensington. The major sponsor was Sycuan Casino and $8,000 was raised to support the mission of encouraging future musicians and building audiences for classical music in the greater San Diego area.

Urban Campout 2007 Drive-in-Rock Out! was presented by Girl Scouts, San Diego-Imperial Council on Sept. 14 at the Girl Scouts headquarters. Geico was the presenting sponsor. Other sponsors included CW Cares for Kids Fund, 1st Pacific Bank, Sempra Energy and AMN Healthcare Inc. The $35,000 raised will provide assistance for Girl Scouts’ summer camps, events, uniforms and membership fees.

Malashock Dance sponsored Malashock Thinks You Can Dance at Qualcomm Hall on Sept. 15. San Diego National Bank, Oasis Bar & Grill, Debby and Hal Jacobs, Bailey Gardiner Inc., Cubic Corp. and Sempra Energy were among sponsors of the event, which raised $30,000.

“We are so appreciative of the outpouring of support from the community for this kick-off to our 20th anniversary season,” said Artistic Director John Malashock. “It raised awareness of our education and outreach programs.”
