Silicon Valley venture capital firm Advanced Technology Ventures joined Domain Associates and Okapi Venture Capital in Helixis Inc.’s $10 million Series A round completed in late August, Helixis announced Oct. 5.
In conjunction with the investment, venture partner Ken Noonan joined Helixis’ board of directors.
Helixis is developing low-cost molecular diagnostic products aimed at biomedical research, personalized medicine, pandemic screening and bio-security. The Carlsbad-based firm’s core technology is based studies conducted at the California Institute of Technology.
Helixis is led by Alex Dickinson, a former president, chief executive officer and co-founder of Luxtera Inc. Founders of the company include California Institute of Technology professors David Baltimore and Axel Scherer. Baltimore was a co-recipient of the 1975 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Scherer, a Caltech professor of electrical engineering, applied physics and physics, also helped found Luxtera and acts as an adviser to the firm.
