More Than $4M Contributed to Post-Fire Fund

The San Diego Foundation is taking on the question of what can make the county whole again following last month’s fires.

The foundation has reassembled the team it used to determine civic needs after the 2003 Cedar Fire. With the help of community leaders and volunteers, the group is working to size up community needs in the wake of the Witch, Harris, Poomacha and Rice fires, and associated blazes.

Foundation representatives traveled to fire-affected areas beginning Nov. 5 to assess community needs. They are now compiling a report, which the foundation will make available in December.

As of Nov. 15, the foundation had more than $6 million in commitments for its After-the-Fires Fund. Some $4.6 million of that had been received. By Nov. 15, the foundation had distributed $180,000, mostly to firefighting agencies.
