Phil’s BBQ Cookin’ Up Second, Larger Location in Point Loma

For some, there’s no substitute for Southern-style mesquite grilled pork ribs, slathered with tangy barbecue sauce, served with corn on the cob and a side of homemade coleslaw.

That’s a staple at Phil’s BBQ, an award-winning Mission Hills eatery, and that’s what prompted some irate diners to call the San Diego Business Journal’s hospitality reporter.

The restaurant at the corner of Goldfinch and Washington streets was closed and they wanted to know why. They thought we should check into matters.

We did.

Phil Pace, co-owner of the 2,700-square-foot namesake restaurant with seating for 70 that has been operating in Mission Hills since 1998, will soon open a second, larger Phil’s in Point Loma.

The logistics of the expansion involved relocating the commissary for the Mission Hills restaurant to the new location, which is scheduled to open Feb. 13. To ensure consistency of the menu items at both eateries, all of the prep work, including making sauces, will be done in Point Loma.

Therefore, the Mission Hills location will reopen a week or so later than the new Phil’s.

Pace apologized for any confusion, saying he’d changed the message on the restaurant’s answering machine to update callers on events.

“We’d typically close for vacation in January to give the staff a month off and do fix-ups and maintenance,” he said. “The same as this year.”

Securing permits from the city for electrical work at the new restaurant took more time than expected. But he anticipates his customer base will return full force, just as they have in the past.

Barbecue lovers are loyal, maybe just a little insecure.

Pace said the price tag to open the new 6,700-square-foot restaurant with seating for 220 on Sports Arena Boulevard is approximately $750,000. It is located near the intersection of Midway Drive.

He declined to cite revenue figures or give projections. But he said he averages 1,800 customers a day at the Mission Hills restaurant. According to the restaurant’s Web site, full rib dinners , 10 to 12 bones , go for $18.95. A half-rib dinner is priced at $12.95 and quarter-rib dinner is $9.95.

Both restaurants will be open six days a week for lunch and dinner. They will close on Mondays.

Aficionados may appreciate knowing that they will be able to wash their barbecue down with beer and wine at the Point Loma location. No alcohol is served at the Mission Hills restaurant.
