Vivendi Buys Video Game Developer

High Moon Studios, an independent Carlsbad video game developer, has been purchased by Vivendi Universal Games.

High Moon announced its acquisition Jan. 5, but did not disclose the financial terms of the agreement. The shop employs more than 100 game developers and has been best known for its first-person shooting game Darkwatch.

Under terms of the agreement, VU Games retains High Moon’s staff and rights to the studio’s intellectual property. CEO John Rowe will continue as the company’s chief leader.

“VU Games and High Moon are already collaborating on a soon-to-be-announced project based on a major entertainment license,” Bruce Hack, the chief executive officer of VU Games, said in a release. “Our acquisition of the studio is another major step forward in building the company’s position as a leader in next-generation console games.”

Vivendi Universal Games also owns such well-known labels as Blizzard Entertainment and Sierra Entertainment. It publishes and distributes the massively popular online game World of Warcraft as well as a host of other well-known titles, including Diablo, Crash Bandicoot and StarCraft.
