IndUS Entrepreneurs Hosts ‘Daring Visionaries’

Carlsbad Chamber Hosts Trade, Marketing Clinics

The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce is holding a series of events to assist local small businesses improve their business strategies.

“The ABCs of Importing” will be held at 7:30 a.m. March 26. Carlos Vidali, president and chief executive officer of San Diego-based Ocean Garden Products, will teach attendees how to expand and improve business.

At the same session, Gary Perl of San Diego-based HiirsonWexlerPerl will also speak on “The ABCs of Importing Personnel.” He will advise the audience on visas and how to cut through immigration red tape.

The chamber will hold another event April 9, also at 7:30 a.m. Tony Vignieri, of Carlsbad-based Vignieri Communications, will speak on “Utilizing the Media.”

At the same session, Andrea Patterson, of Carlsbad-based LookLogic, will advise audience members on “Internet Marketing.”

Another event, at 7:30 a.m. April 23, is on “International Trade Finance.” Ralph Clumec, of San Diego-based First National Bank, will speak.

Daring Visionaries: The local chapter of the IndUS Entrepreneurs will hold a seminar on how aspiring business owners can build companies and create wealth.

TiE San Diego will host Ray Smilor, president of the La Jolla-based Foundation for Enterprise Development. Smilor will speak on “Daring Visionaries” at 6 p.m. March 26 at the La Jolla Women’s Club.

TiE was originally formed to assist entrepreneurs born in India and living in the United States. Now it sponsors all forms of entrepreneurship, according to a statement on its Web site.

Cost is $35 for TiE members, $45 for non-members and includes an Indian dinner.

Cue The Sinatra Music: San Diego businesswomen are invited to do it their way.

The title of the fourth annual Women’s Business Conference is “Doing Business Her Way.” The March 28 networking and information seminar is co-sponsored by the Service Corps of Retired Executives and the U.S. Small Business Administration.

The day will feature several workshops, including “How to Make Better Business Decisions,” “Does Your Thinking Limit Your Success?” “Organizing 101” and more.

The keynote speaker will be Lynn Livengood, assistant vice president at Science Applications International Corp.

The daylong conference will be at MiraCosta College, San Elijo campus, starting at 8 a.m. Events include a trade show featuring women-owned businesses, door prizes and more. Cost for the entire day is $55 in advance, or $65 at the door.

But No Cookies: Seven shopping malls throughout San Diego are jointly hosting Girl Scout Day 2002.

The event will be held from noon to 4 p.m. April 27, simultaneously at all Westfield Shoppingtown locations. The day will mark the 90th anniversary of Girl Scouting, said Victoria Muschek, a spokeswoman for Westfield.

The event will feature tables with information on membership, camping displays, poster contests and more, Muschek said.

An additional event will be “April Showers.” Shoppers are invited to donate personal hygiene items , soap, shampoo, and so forth, she said.

The toiletries will go to the American Red Cross, to be distributed to families needing assistance in San Diego and Imperial counties, Muschek said.

Shoppers who drop off these items at Bath & Body Works, at any of the seven malls, will receive a special 15 percent discount that day, she said.

SD Biz Taps Yahoo!: The Internet giant Yahoo! has a special site to assist small business, and one San Diego company is already taking advantage of it.

The site, (http://smallbusiness.yahoo.com), offers services to aid companies in promotion, creating a Web presence, and more, said Ana Cano, spokeswoman for Yahoo!

Theo Chen, owner of San Diego-based Autographs for Sale, has been working with Yahoo! since November 1999. His Web site, at (http://store.yahoo.com/autographsforsale/), is offering Yahoo! browsers about 3,000 celebrity-signed products, Cano said.

For a current promotion, the Yahoo! Biggest Internet Sale, Autographs for Sale is offering free priority ground shipping for all products purchased, she said.
