Small businesses will now face fewer obstacles as they apply for contract work with the San Diego County Water Authority.

The water authority is offering a new insurance program which will make it easier for contractors to meet county insurance requirements. The service will be a cost-saving alternative to the rates offered by most insurance companies, said Donna Nenow, spokeswoman for the water authority.

Small contractors applying for insurance usually find the premiums too costly and the enrollment process lengthy and cumbersome. The new service has low premiums, low deductibles and is pre-approved, she said.

The program, administered by the Robert F. Driver Co., Inc., calculates coverage based on the amount of the contract, making insurance contract-specific. The program is available to all contractors and consultants, Nenow said.

Other agencies using this service include the city of San Diego, the county of San Diego, the San Diego Housing Commission and the San Diego Unified Port District, he said.

“This program is a win-win for both contractors and the authority,” said James Turner, chairman of the board. “We wanted to open up opportunities for small contractors to do business with the authority by removing barriers.”

Food (Really) Drives: The San Diego Food Bank got a delivery of more than 600 pounds of non-perishable food, thanks to a series of food drives by Mossy Nissan.

The automotive dealership held a food drive at each of its five dealerships throughout San Diego County. The goal at each of these food drives was to fill the bed of a 2002 Nissan Frontier Crew Cab Longbed pickup truck, said Vince Heald, spokesman for Mossy Nissan.

The food drive began Dec. 14 and ran through mid-January. The total weight of the food was tallied and announced earlier this month.

As an added incentive to the food drive, people who donated food were eligible for prizes. A $500 gift certificate to San Diego’s Ikea furniture store was given out at each of the five dealerships, Heald said.

The intent was to inspire and encourage as many people as possible to participate in helping San Diego’s hungry, said Sandy Mossy of Mossy Nissan.

“For more than 20 years, Mossy has been part of the San Diego community,” she said. Our Frontier Food Drive was just one small way we can do our part for San Diego families who are less fortunate, and we’re grateful for any opportunity to help out.”
