Construction Starts on $100M Moores UCSD Cancer Center

Construction is under way in La Jolla on the $100 million Rebecca and John Moores UCSD Cancer Center on the school’s campus.

The 270,000-square-foot facility is scheduled to be completed in 2004. It is going up on 2.4 acres southeast of the UCSD Thornton Hospital and Perlman Ambulatory Care Center on the university’s east campus in La Jolla.

It was designed by Zimmer Gunsul Frasca Partnership in Los Angeles, the architecture firm’s third project on the UCSD campus. The general contractor is McCarthy Building Cos. Inc., headquartered in St. Louis.

The cancer center will consolidate programs and people that are currently located in various buildings around the campus into one facility. It will house more than 300 physicians, scientists and staff members working on clinical, research, education and outreach activities.

The center will be one of 40 buildings in the United States to hold a National Cancer Institute designation as a Comprehensive Cancer Center.

The Moores’ contributed $20 million for the project. Jerome and Miriam Katzin donated $15 million.
