Local Firms Land School Construction Contracts

Local Firms Land School Construction Contracts

The San Diego Unified School District has awarded nearly $31 million in construction contracts to four local firms.

The projects are funded by Proposition MM, the $1.51 billion bond measure that funds improvements at 165 existing schools and construction of 16 new or redeveloped schools. The projects include: new library buildings; major additions; new instructional support space; wiring for Internet access; science classrooms and labs; improved access for the physically disabled; lunch court shelters; and major aesthetic and functional repairs, such as painting, roofing and paving.

Escondido-based Erickson-Hall Construction Co. won a contract for $4.1 million for work at Brooklyn Elementary School and Wilson Middle School in Mid-City. The architect is locally based WWB Design Collaborative.

The Augustine Co. Inc. of San Diego, was awarded a contract of $4.3 million for construction at McKinley Elementary School in North Park. WWB is the architect.

San Diego-based T.B. Penick & Sons Inc., won a contract of $5 million, for construction work at Montgomery Middle School in Linda Vista and Memorial Junior High in Logan Heights. The architect is Sillman Wright Architects of San Diego.

C.E. Wylie Construction Co. of San Diego, was awarded a contract of $4.3 million for construction work at O’Farrell Middle School and the San Diego School of Creative and Performing Arts in Paradise Hills. San Diego-based Edward J. Cass and Associates is the architect.

Also, the school district awarded its first contract, which is worth $13.3 million, for a new elementary school to the design-build team of Erickson-Hall and San Diego-based HMC Architects. They will design and build the new Cherokee Point Elementary School in City Heights, which is scheduled to open in the fall of 2005.

Insurance Agents, Brokers Can Phone in Renewals

The California Department of Insurance now has a toll-free phone line for insurance agents and brokers to renew their licenses.

The Producer Licensing Bureau’s toll-free number is (800) 967-9331. Callers will be connected to an interactive voice response system, which will guide them through a step-by-step renewal process.

The system will ask licensees the same questions that are on the traditional mail-in renewal application. Once the required information is gathered, a credit card number will be requested to pay the regular license renewal fee. There is no additional charge to renew licenses over the phone.

New licenses will be mailed within 72 hours.

California law requires agents and brokers to renew their licenses every two years. Agents can renew on the phone as long as they are within 90 days of their license expiration date.
