Innovation Steals Show: Connect Awards Highlight Promising Technologies

UCSD Connect honored the forward thinking of eight San Diego companies last week during the organization’s 15th annual Most Innovative New Product Awards.

Aeronex, Inc. won in the hardware category for its Micro Infinity Gas Purification System. The product removes contaminants such as moisture, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide from process gases.

Akonix Systems Inc. won in the software category for its Akonix L7 product. The software protects corporate networks from dangers posed by public instant messaging.

Ethertronics won in the telecommunications category for its DualNet MPCI Internal Antenna Module. This antenna can go inside portable computers.

Gen-Probe Inc. won in the life science category for its Procleix HIV-1/HCV Assay. Blood banks can use this test to detect both HIV and hepatitis C.

American Technology Corp. won in the general technology category for its HyperSonic Sound product, an ultrasonic-to-audio, parametric loudspeaker.

Perlan Therapeutics Inc. won in the biotechnology R & D; category for ColdSol. The bioengineered antibody fusion protein is meant to be a nasal spray for the prevention and treatment of the common cold.

Maxima Corp. won in the technology R & D; category for its long-wave infrared free-space optics product. It’s designed to overcome the difficulties other laser communications technologies have in fog.

Award winners were selected based on their ability to demonstrate the technology’s innovation, its technological advancement and its potential for commercial success.

Connect presented its Bill Otterson Award to Idec Pharmaceuticals, recognizing Rituxan, its non-Hodgkins lymphoma drug. The Otterson Award goes to a company whose product has demonstrated a significant positive impact on society or quality of life.

The Gray Cary Award for Technology Innovation went to the San Diego Regional Technology Alliance.

More than 850 people attended the awards ceremony Dec. 11 at the San Diego Marriott Hotel & Marina.
