State, DoD Sign Anti-Pollution Pact

State, DoD Sign Anti-Pollution Pact

The Department of Defense signed an agreement with the California Environmental Protection Agency to help prevent pollution in the state.

The agreement, signed Nov. 26 at the Submarine Base in Point Loma, calls on the Department of Defense to take on a greater role in handling waste and other matters. This is the third time the department has entered into an environmental pact with a state, after earlier agreements with Arizona and Hawaii, according to a statement from the Commander Navy Region Southwest.

The deal with California has a wider scope than the others, due to the number of military bases and personnel in the state. There will be plenty of opportunities for the state of California and the military to work together, the statement said.

Ex-Assemblywoman Gets Airport Authority Post

The San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has added another board member.

North County mayors Corky Smith of San Marcos; Mickey Cafagna of Poway; and Lori Holt Pfeiler of Escondido appointed former assemblywoman Charlene Zettel to a four-year term.

Members of the airport authority will oversee the critical issues facing the air transportation needs of San Diego County. The airport passes from the San Diego Unified Port District’s control to the regional airport authority on Jan. 1.

For the past year, an interim board has governed the airport authority.

In 1998, Zettel was elected to represent the 75th District of more than 420,000 citizens from north and east San Diego County in the 80-member state Assembly. She is recognized as an expert on health, education, public safety and business issues.

Other regional airport authority board member appointees include San Diego City Councilman Ralph Inzunza; San Diego attorney Paul Peterson; San Diego businessman Paul Nieto; Lemon Grove Mayor Mary Sessom; and Oceanside Mayor Terry Johnson.

Board of directors positions are not paid.
