Local VR Business Brokers Office Tops in Company

The San Diego office of VR Business Brokers, a specialist in brokering the sale of small and medium-sized businesses, said it did $32 million in transaction fees last year, making it No. 1 among VR’s 71 offices.

The deals ranged in transaction size from $150,000 to $6.7 million for a service company based in Escondido and averaged $500,000, said Bill Lange, president of the local office.

“Part of the reason we did so well is that the San Diego economy has continued to be pretty strong compared to other places in the nation, and there are a lot of buyers who keep coming here that want to buy a business,” Lange said.

In addition to taking top honors in the VR network, the San Diego office had five of the company’s top five brokers. Hal Janke was the company’s top producer. Other top brokers were Dwight Jones, Fred Renzoni, Ken Oppeltz and Lange. The local office has 10 brokers.

VR specializes in selling firms with sales between $100,000 and $10 million, and typically collects a commission of 10 percent for the sale of a business with sales less than $1 million, Lange said.

Stone & Youngberg LLC said it has begun offering brokerage services at its San Diego office. The San Francisco-based firm has been in the area for 50 years structuring and underwriting both public and private debt.

The private client groups’ first hire was James Chafin, who has nearly 20 years in the securities industry. Cathie Kiel, who also has 20 years experience, joins Chafin in the office.
