California Tower Identified With 2003 Super Bowl Logo

Images of the California Tower, home of the Museum of Man in Balboa Park, will be synonymous with any image of the 2003 Super Bowl.

The San Diego Super Bowl Committee and the National Football League recently unveiled the host committee’s logo for the game, which will be played in San Diego on Jan. 26, 2003. The logo depicts the California Tower as the centerpiece of the design, integrating San Diego’s cultural history with its athletic lifestyle.

According to the committee, Balboa Park is known as the heart of San Diego and the California Tower is the architectural icon of the community.

“I’m very pleased that we selected the California Tower as the focal point of our logo, as San Diego is far more than wonderful weather and beaches,” said Ron Fowler, chairman of the San Diego Super Bowl XXXVII Host Committee. “Additionally, the logo reflects the significant role that Balboa Park has played in San Diego’s history.”

The host committee will announce a community council in early November to serve as the official organization for the Super Bowl. The community council will include a cross-section of community leaders from the tourism and hospitality industry, local civic and business groups, media and other organizations. The San Diego International Sports Council will serve as the management arm for the host committee. San Diego previously hosted Super Bowl XXII in 1988 and Super Bowl XXXII in 1998.
