Cell Phone Users Sign Up for Service and Good Cause

Ronald McDonald House Charities of San Diego and Easy Wireless, a local wireless service provider have teamed up with a goal of raising more than $350,000 to assist children and families who benefit from the local charity.

From now through Dec. 27, San Diegans who sign up for one year of AT & T; wireless service and make a minimum donation of $20 to the charity, will receive a free Ericsson T19LX digital phone.

“Customers can get a premium package and make a donation for a good cause,” said Miles Paschini, president of Easy Wireless, an independent company contracted with AT & T; to process the wireless service.

The special promotional package includes a car adapter and hands-free kit, and customers can choose from AT & T; Wireless Digital Advantage Rate plans starting at $39.99 and feature free minutes and nationwide long distance.

“This is a great value for the consumer and it will really help out a great charity,” said Annette Richardson, executive director for the local charity house.

To make a donation, customers can call (800) 995-CALL, log onto (www.mcdonaldsphone.com) or go to San Diego area McDonald’s restaurants.

The donations will go to support the daily operations of the Ronald McDonald House, a temporary lodging facility for families whose children with serious illnesses are being treated at nearby hospitals.

The response has been positive so far, Richardson said.

“With all the events that have happened, it seems more people are realizing that charitable giving is a good thing,” she said.

Now in its fifth year of hosting a wireless service fund-raiser, Richardson said the campaign is beneficial for all parties participating, not just McDonald’s.

“It’s (the fund-raiser) an all-around good partnership. You can tap into customers on both sides , it drives more traffic into (McDonald’s) restaurants and brings in more customers for AT & T;,” she said.

“(Another) one of the benefits is that McDonald’s gets the donations in real time,” Paschini said.

Having the service available online and through the 800-call center allows Easy Wireless to process the orders immediately and deliver the donations in a more timely manner, versus previous years where there was a 90- to 120-day lag period, he said.

“We want the charity to raise as much money as possible,” Paschini said.

Phone demonstrations and other promotional events will also be held, during the three-month campaign at participating McDonald’s restaurants.
