Small Fleet To Make Big Waves in S.D.

A new fleet is making its way to the Embarcadero. But this one takes a remarkably small amount of space.

The San Diego Maritime Museum is about to bring in a new exhibit of miniature model ships.

“Masterpieces in Miniature” will be the first show in the country to feature just miniatures, according to a museum representative.

The exhibit will be launched June 15 and will run through December. It will be shown on the steamship Berkeley, which will charge the standard Maritime Museum admission.

Adults are charged $6, and there are various discounts for children, seniors, military and groups.

There will be close to 50 models, ranging in size from 3 inches to 3 feet. They are built to a scale of 1/16th of an inch per yard, or smaller. Some of the ships are in bottles.

The exhibit will feature ships from the 14th century to the present.

Many of the models took more than a year to create.

“This is as good as it gets in ship modeling,” said Bob Crawford, the museum’s curator of ship models.

Because they are intricately and elaborately constructed, some people consider them the Faberg & #233; eggs of ship models, according to the museum. According to a representative, the models are one of a kind.

The “Masterpieces” exhibit overlaps slightly with another exhibit at the Maritime Museum. A collection of 17th-century Dutch maritime art is on display through August.
