Technology Carlsbad chamber prepares to celebrate its tech appeal

Technology: Annual Event Promotes City as a Local Tech Mecca

CARLSBAD , Over the past several years, numerous high-tech startup and established companies have opened offices here.

There’s no single explanation as to why companies such as Lucent Technologies and Atlanta-based software developer IXL chose Carlsbad as a place to do business.

But Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce representatives said the momentum is growing, and they are catching on.

The chamber is planning its annual event to honor outgoing and incoming board members and directors. Rather than taking the traditional route of stuffing and sending out invitations by mail, the chamber partnered with Encinitas-based Electronic Theater to create interactive invitations.

The mini-CD-ROM recently was delivered to 2,800 chamber members. It offers an overview of the event’s theme, “A Chamber Odyssey,” with a brief presentation and link to the chamber’s Web site to RSVP online.

Electronic Theater, which primarily produces animated digital brochures, partnered with 1 Media West of Solana Beach to create the content for the invitation. It was replicated by San Diego-based WEBcard Technologies Inc., a developer of business and trading card-sized CD-ROM products.

Chamber officials estimated it cost $2,500 to create and produce the invitation. Their goal was to save time and cost for postage and to emulate the high-tech business community in the city, according to organizers.

“We wanted to design the invitation so people could just jump online anytime of day and go directly to the chamber Web site,” said Jerri Lyne Nachman, owner of Electronic Theater.

In the last year, more than a dozen software development companies set up shop in Carlsbad. Among them are RedDotNet, Peer 3, I-Metrikus, Dothill Systems, KeyLime Software, ModeTek and Kinzan, a spinoff of IXL’s software development department.

“The growth has been tremendous,” said Jan Sobel, CEO of the Carlsbad chamber. “The growth has been in our membership of high-tech companies and companies that are contacting us about moving here.”

Because of the influx of high-tech companies to enter Carlsbad, the chamber formed a technology committee.

“The technology community is a large part of our economy and we recognize that and address their needs,” said Laurie Levenson, chair of the chamber’s technology committee.

According to data from the San Diego Association of Governments, there were 29,600 high-tech/computer-related jobs in the county last year. That number is expected to increase by nearly 40 percent in 2020.

The San Diego Regional Economic Development Corp. boasts the region is emerging as a leader in the technology arena.
