Telethon on Fox To Benefit Animals

Fox TV and Pasadena-based PetSmart are sponsoring a local telethon inviting people to make a pledge to help cats, dogs and even rabbits in San Diego’s animal shelters.

The fourth annual PETelethon will be held March 3 to benefit the programs of the San Diego Humane Society and the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The telethon will air from noon to 5 p.m. on Channel 6, said Gigi Bacon Theberge, a spokeswoman for the Humane Society.

The telethon will feature a phone bank, adoptable animals, videos on the shelter’s programs and services, heartwarming adoption vignettes, and entries from its “Animal Antics” video contest. Celebrity hosts include John Elliott and Angie Austin of “Fox in the Morning,” Airwatch America’s Pamela Howe and Dave Mason of KJOY-94.1 FM, she said.

Society volunteers, donors and PetSmart employees will answer the phones and take pledges throughout the broadcast. For information, call (619) 299-7012, Ext. 218, Theberge said.

The San Diego Humane Society and SPCA serve the county by placing 3,500 animals into homes each year , mostly dogs and cats. The shelter also places horses, rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and reptiles, she said.

The Humane Society also investigates animal cruelty and neglect, enforces state humane laws, shares animals through pet-assisted therapy and rescues animals in emergency situations, Theberge said.

The telethon is one of only three annual events the San Diego Humane Society holds to raise money.

Money from the telethon will go toward the San Diego animal shelters only. The Escondido Humane Society, whose animal shelter burned down recently, is a separate entity, Theberge said.
