Media Newspapers exchange staff; management team hired

With a new editor at the helm and a new management team at its parent company’s headquarters, there is a new sense of excitement at the Star-News in Chula Vista.

After editor Joe Guerin left to become managing editor at the San Diego Daily Transcript, Star-News publisher Linda Rosas hired Manny Cruz, special sections editor at, ironically, the Transcript.

Cruz, whose last day at the Transcript was Feb. 9, said he’s happy to be back in community newspapers.

Along with the Star-News, Cruz will also oversee San Diego Seniors, a 30,000-circulation monthly published by Star-News staff.

Cruz has been in San Diego media for more than three decades, having logged 20 years with the Daily Californian in East County and then 12 years at the Transcript, a local business paper. An SDSU graduate, Cruz’s first reporting job was at the North Shore Sentinel in La Jolla.

For the last two years at the Transcript, Cruz had been special sections editor. Before that, he was news editor.

According to Cruz, the desire to seek new challenges and the position’s availability motivated him to make the change.

He’s excited to be in Chula Vista, mentioning “fast growth” and “good people.”

Linda Rosas, the Star-News’ publisher since 1997, is enthusiastic about the paper’s future.

Guerin will be missed, Rosas said. During the four years he was at the paper, his ability to connect with the community helped get the once-ailing publication back on track, she said.

Another change at the paper will be new to Rosas and the rest of the staff as well: a recently appointed leadership team at Pacific-Sierra Publishing, Inc., which owns the Star-News, five dailies and more than 10 other papers in California. It also operates a commercial printing facility in San Diego.

Earlier this month, Pacific-Sierra, which is based in Merced, and was previously known as Central Valley Publishing, announced that Anthony Allegretti has joined the company as president and CEO.

Allegretti’s most recent position was president and CEO of Independent Media Group, which he held until the company was sold last summer. According to Pacific-Sierra, Allegretti has more than 30 years’ experience in the industry.

Pacific-Sierra also announced that LeRoy Gorrell was promoted to executive vice president of the company, and Robert Schmitz will join the executive team. Schmitz’s new position was not announced.

Pacific-Sierra also announced a new publisher of another of its papers, the Merced Sun-Star. Stephen Staloch will join the paper in that capacity.

Rosas doesn’t expect the upper management changes to affect Star-News operations.
