Magazine Honors Local Career Women

Three San Diego women entrepreneurs have been selected from among 100 of their West Coast peers for running businesses of excellence, according to Working Woman magazine.

The nationally distributed magazine recognizes female entrepreneurs for their achievements in business according to six regions nationwide.

On Jan. 29, three local women , Lorraine Iverson, CEO and co-founder of the Hillcrest-based public relations firm Cooper Iverson Marketing; Michelle Morton Schoeffel, president and CEO of the La Jolla-based brokerage firm Pacific American Securities LLC; and Abby Margalith, president of the Clairemont-based moving firm Peoplemovers Co. , received “Entrepreneurial Excellence Awards” during the West Coast regional award ceremony held in San Francisco.

Iverson, who entered the magazine’s third annual contest for the first time, was thrilled to win in the “best employer” category.

With less than 2 percent turnover and employee-friendly incentives, such as profit-sharing, flexible working hours, and bring your dog to work days, Iverson earned the loyalty of her 17-member staff.

Iverson co-founded the PR firm specializing in high-technology in 1990.

Her clients include Alibre Systems in Texas.

Morton Schoeffel co-founded Pacific American Securities with her husband in February 1998. She won for “general excellence.”

Her 40 employees get quarterly bonuses.

She also extends benefits to the partners of gay employees and prides herself in supporting working, single mothers.

Clients include large money managers and pension plans. She declined to give names.

Margalith, who has owned Peoplemovers Co. since 1983, won in the category of “social responsibility.” That includes moving battered women and their children out of violent homes for free.
