Million-Dollar Gift Will Help UC San Diego Add Top Scholars

Lise Warschawski gifted UC San Diego $1 million in honor of her late husband, Stefan Warschawski, founder of the university’s Department of Mathematics. The gift is split between the department and the UCSD Moores Cancer Center. In both campus areas, the funds will help recruit outstanding scholars to UCSD … Scripps Memorial Hospital La Jolla raised $1.3 million at the 18th annual Spinoff: Auction for Life, an Evening on the Orient Express. Sponsors included Home Bank of California, Lloyd Pest Control and Wells Fargo Private Bank. All proceeds from the May 7 event benefited cancer programs and services at Scripps Cancer Center, Stevens Division … The Armed Services YMCA of San Diego County was awarded a Community YMCA Award, part of the Raytheon Program Achievement Awards luncheon held in Washington, D.C. It was recognized for exceptional work to support military families. “The Community YMCA Awards are a way for us to acknowledge the on-the-ground efforts these facilities make toward improving the quality of life for our soldiers and their families,” said Armed Services YMCA National Executive Director Frank Gallo … Chuck Hansen, Viejas vice president of community relations, was named 2009 San Diego Tourism Leader of the Year by the San Diego East Visitors Bureau. The money will help fund essential support services for local teens and adults with disabilities, including supported living … The S. Mark Taper Foundation provided $10,000 to the United Through Reading Transitions Program. The program is available to families separated by incarceration, drug treatment or social services and gives children a chance to see their absent parents in a positive light by offering parents an opportunity to be recorded on DVD reading storybooks to their children at home … Employees of Gafcon participated in the construction consultancy’s third Build Day for Habitat for Humanity. Through a partnership with the city of Oceanside, San Diego Habitat for Humanity is constructing 20 single-family homes. Gafcon has contributed $20,000, including participation in the three day event … The UCSD Chancellor’s Associates recently honored five faculty members who excelled as a philosopher of science, an ethnic studies scholar, a cell and developmental biologist, a researcher on memory, and a human rights advocate. Chancellor’s Associates, a program for donors to the university, recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of university faculty members with a citation and a $2,500 honorarium … The Carlsbad Chamber of Commerce held its annual Outstanding Educational Program Awards Dinner on May 8. Teachers who create remarkable academic programs in Carlsbad schools were honored. The show also received three Drama Desk Award nominations … The San Diego Futures Foundation received a $12,000 gift from Las Patronas to purchase a Mitsubishi FH diesel truck for hauling large amounts of electronic equipment. SDFF’s recycling and salvage efforts benefit the entire San Diego community. E-waste recycling becomes more cost-effective when it’s done in greater amounts, which is made possible by the use of this truck.
