Flattering Invitation for Appeal Media’s Creative Director

A small-business owner, public library representative and redevelopment proponent are just a few of the faces that make up the newly appointed board for the Public Relations Society of America’s San Diego chapter.

Audrey Benedetto, the 37-year-old past board secretary, is now the trade association’s local chapter president. Benedetto, who co-founded Benedetto Communications Inc. in 1999, said she hopes to organize more professional development programs and events this coming year.

Helping Benedetto lead the 250-member chapter is President-elect Erika Rooks Wilgenburg, communications manager of the San Diego Housing Commission; Treasurer Jessica Padilla Bowen, community coordinator of the Carlsbad City Library; Secretary Sara Walker of Carmel Valley-based boutique c3 Communications Inc.; and Derek Danziger, immediate past president of the chapter, who serves as communications director of San Diego’s redevelopment arm, the Centre City Development Corp.

Each, including Benedetto, will serve a one-year term.

“My main goal is to ensure that every PRSA member receives value for their membership through quality education and professional development programs and events,” Benedetto said. “We also want to reach out deeper into the business community to unify, strengthen and advance the profession of public relations.”

Founded in 1959, the local chapter also named four directors at large. They are Alex Angelle of Del Mar’s Alex Angelle Public Relations; Erin Gillooly of San Diego’s Corky McMillan Cos.; Rebecca Mikkelson, an independent practitioner; and Denise Scatena of Lemonade Public Relations.

Most high-tech entrepreneurs and innovators don’t have time to put on a tie and sit through a three-hour meeting about policy issues in Washington, D.C. They are too busy creating the next generation of digital mobile applications and lifesaving health care products, and creating jobs for the new innovation economy. There has not been a strong voice or presence in the nation’s capital to represent these innovators, who neither have the money nor bandwidth to lobby or educate representatives on their needs and interests — until now.
