The California Public Utilities Commission approved San Diego Gas & Electric’s $1.9 billion Sunrise Powerlink electric transmission line on Dec. 18.
The commission’s vote was 4-1.
The 120-mile-long line will bring electricity from the Imperial Valley to the San Diego metropolitan area.
SDG&E said it will now finalize project engineering and design, buy equipment and begin construction. The company expects to finish the project in 2012.
The power line will deliver as many as 1,000 megawatts of electricity, or enough energy to light 10 million incandescent, 100-watt light bulbs.
San Diego Gas & Electric is a unit of San Diego-based Sempra Energy. Sempra stock, which trades on the New York Stock Exchange as SRE, closed at $40.63 Dec. 18, down from the previous day’s close of $41.33.
