Kyocera Wireless Corp., based in San Diego and a unit of Kyocera Corp., said Jan. 29 it cut 360 jobs, including 250 based at its San Diego office on Campus Point Way in La Jolla as a result of a global reorganization affecting its mobile handset business.
The affected people locally were mainly in engineering related jobs, said Kyocera spokesman Jay Scovie.
As a result of the cuts, Kyocera Wireless now has about 350 employees here. Kyocera Corp. also operates a manufacturing division here that makes ceramic packages for semiconductor chips that has about 400 employees, and several other subsidiaries that have about 100 workers.
As part of the reorganization, job cuts were also made at a Kyocera Wireless office in India, and one in Chatsworth that was formerly owned by Sanyo Electric Co. Kyocera acquired Sanyo’s wireless unit in 2008.
For the nine months ended Dec. 31, Kyocera Corp., based in Kyoto, Japan, reported net income of $551 million on revenue of $8.7 billion. For the prior fiscal year ended March 31, the company had net earnings of $1 billion on revenue of $12.9 billion.
