Six young San Diego stem cell researchers received almost $15 million in the latest round of grants handed down by the state’s $3 billion stem cell agency.
A governing board for the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine approved a total of $59 million for 23 stem cell researchers nationwide.
UC San Diego scientists Bing Ren, Catriona Jamieson, Shyni Varghese, Mana Parast and Benjamin Yu garnered $13.2 million, and Ricardo Zayas of San Diego State University received $1.7 million.
The New Faculty Awards were designed to support scientists who have reached the early stages of their careers. Grant recipients receive salary and research support for five years.
CIRM’s governing board has approved 229 research and facility grants totaling more than $614 million to date. The agency was established in 2005 with the passage of Proposition 71, the California Stem Cell Research and Cures Act.
