The Golden Care Workforce Institute received a $180,000 grant from the California Wellness Foundation, which will be paid out during the next three years. The Parker Foundation provided an additional $15,000 in funding. Funds from these grants will be used to offset costs associated with training more than 100 San Diego County residents each year to become certified nursing assistants.
The Center for Community Solutions has raised $71,000 at its Seventh Annual Tea by the Sea. Home Depot Supply and Nordstrom were co-sponsors. The funds raised will help sustain the organization’s programs.
The Plumbing Heating Cooling Contractors Association of San Diego has pledged a partnership in support of Rebuilding Together San Diego. With its partnership, PHCC will actively solicit support from its members and affiliates in skilled labor as well as seek in-kind donations for plumbing, heating and cooling materials and supplies.
Jon Sundt, founder and president of Altegris Investments and a UC San Diego alumnus, recently gave $250,000 to support the UCSD Recreation Department. Sundt is an annual supporter of the Recreation Department’s sports clubs. His donation is the first major gift in the history of UCSD Recreation Department. His gift contributes to the $1 billion fund-raising goal of the campaign for UCSD.

The former home of John and Christy Walton has been made a gift to the International Community Foundation. The gift will allow the organization to continue in its mission through the planned establishment of the Center for Cross Border Philanthropy to be located on the property. The Walton family has been supportive of ICF and the organization’s work in promoting bi-national philanthropic programs, initiatives and dialogue between the United States and Mexico.
The 10th annual Golf for Life Charity Classic, benefiting the Sidney Kimmel Cancer Center, netted more than $160,000. The course sponsor was Invitrogen Corp., the reception sponsor was Rudolph and Sletten, and wine sponsor was Merck. The charity event also included 15 other sponsors.
Vons Foundation gave a $25,000 grant to Operation Homefront San Diego for its Emergency Services Support Program. The support from Vons will enable OHSD to assist more military families in San Diego County.
Waste Management of North County has donated $10,000 to the Oceanside Museum of Art for the expansion of the museum. “With this gift and recent pledges, the museum is now within $70,000 of its goal of $5.35 million. Construction on Phase 1 of the museum’s expansion is scheduled for September of this year,” said Skip Pahl, OMA’s executive director.
The Grossmont Healthcare District’s board of directors has voted to grant $106,000 to the Grossmont Union High School District for its Health Pathways program.

The Alliance Healthcare Foundation board of trustees has approved grants totaling $533,000 to be given to the San Diego Organizing Project, ACCESS Immigrant Services and Family Health Centers of San Diego.
