Simplifying the Internet
Chumby Industries Inc. intends to reduce the clutter of the Internet. The Carmel Valley-based, venture-backed startup sells a wireless device about the size of a grapefruit called the Chumby, which delivers simple “widget” applications such as the latest baseball scores, Internet radio or Weather Channel updates through an always-on Wi-Fi connection.

AMN Enjoys Healthy Growth
AMN Healthcare Services Inc., a San Diego nurse staffing firm, reported Aug. 6 second-quarter net income of $9.4 million, up 4 percent compared with the like quarter of 2007.

ViaSat Earnings Boost Stock
The Carlsbad satellite and wireless communications company, ViaSat Inc., posted a 50 percent increase in profits last quarter which has boosted its stock by more than 12 percent, since posting its quarterly earnings after the close of markets Aug. 4.

Illumina Makes $300M Stock Move
Genetic analysis company Illumina Inc. said Aug. 7 it will offer 3.5 million shares of its stock to the public for $87.50 a share. Illumina estimated the offering would provide the company with approximately $300 million.

Kratos Reports Lower Earnings
Kratos Defense and Security Solutions Inc. reported Aug. 6 that it had second quarter net income of $800,000, compared to net income of $4.2 million for the like quarter of 2007.

Sempra Reports Earnings for Latest Quarter
Sempra Energy, parent of San Diego Gas & Electric, reported Aug. 7 second quarter net income of $244 million, or 98 cents per diluted share, compared to net earnings of $277 million or $1.05 per share in the like quarter of 2007.

Controversial Sunroad Tower Signs First Tenant
The Sunroad Centrum office tower in Kearny Mesa — which had its grand opening delayed by numerous stop work orders in 2006 and 2007 due to federal aviation officials’ concerns about its height — has signed its first tenant.
